Minister John Baird Knocks Ottawa Councillor Marianne Wilkinson Down A Notch

Transport Minister John Baird gives City Councillor Marianne Wilkinson a reality check at Ottawa Taxpayers’s Advocacy Group open forum for city council candidates:

“Councillor Marianne Wilkinson from Kanata North took the liberty of giving a backhand remark about a federal proposal to ban dumping raw sewage into the Ottawa river.”

“When Minister John Baird got up he returned the favour by giving her a direct smack when he chastized Councillor Wilkinson for spending money on things like pedestrian bridges when they should be focussing on priorities such as stopping the dumping of sewage into the river.”

Baird is not being constructive: fixed sewers and a much more walkable /cyclable city are both very important. Is it that he only gets driven about in chaffuered cars paid by taxpayers that he doesn't realize that some of us prefer and can only afford walking and cycling. And hasn't "his" infrastructure funding helped build footbridges elsewhere? Why not in Ottawa where the Rideau canal and river really make east-west cycling and walking much longer and unsafer than they should be.

The footbridge referred to is just a few blocks from a major bridge.

It is not about a more walkable city: it is about sheer laziness on the part of its proponents, at a cost of eight million dollars which could do a lot of good spent on needed infrastructure.

That photo isn't from the OTAG meeting yesterday. Nice use of a file photo, but shouldn't you have identified it as such?
